Historian Joan Severance has returned to Sicily after being dismissed from Brown University. Unable to face her demons, she takes refuge in the library of Valparuta. As she falls under the town's spell, the town's archivist Cosimo Chiesa begins a subtle campaign of seduction and tutelage forcing Joan to confront her unacknowledged past.
