Jon Krakauer, who has himself stood atop Mount Everest, returned to Nepal in 1996 intending to report on the commercialization of ascents on the mountain. Instead he witnessed a disaster involving a freak blizzard, a guide who was determined to press on and amateur climbers who attempted the ascent with minimal mountaineering skills.
