The inhabitants of Pern have traditionally tithed food and supplies to the dragonweyrs, the telepathic dragons and their riders that are the only protection from the life-threatening Thread. But it has been over 400 years since the last Threadfall, and some people doubt that the menace will strike again. But rider F'lar knows that the Red Star is near and Thread will fall soon.
