When Viktor Palmgren is shot during a speech, the repercussions are widespread, both on the international money markets and in the small town of Malmö. Chief Inspector Martin Beck begins a systemic search for the enemies, associates and call girls who may have wanted Palmgren dead. He finds he has nothing but contempt for the victim and sympathy for the murderer.
