DCI Carrick is playing rugby for the police team when an injury sidelines him. His substitute, DS Morley, is an undercover policeman. The next day Morley’s body is found with the initials RK carved on his torso. Gillard and Langley are called in and Carrick asks them for help on a private matter: his father, whom he thought dead, is alive and going by the name Robert Kennedy.
