The "lonely places" described in this book are isolated by culture, politics, and sometimes geography. These essays explore countries that tourists seldom visit, and record Iyer's impressions of why places such as Paraguay, Cuba, Iceland and Bhutan don't fit in. Iyer sometimes passes along special pointers for the potential traveller.
